Coupe de France, semi-finals
Stade Jean Bouin, Angers
Angers SCO 2 - 0 EA Guingamp
Victorious Angers will now face the winner of Wednesday's second semi-final between Paris Saint-Germain and AS Monaco in a gala match at the Stade de France on May 27, fighting for the Coupe de France title for the first time since 1957.
Stéphane Moulin's side had a capacity 18,000-strong crowd at the Stade Jean Bouin to spur them on and took full advantage against a Guingamp side who failed to get back on track after Saturday's 3-0 league loss to Lille, Thomas Mangani striking in the first half with a point-blank finish (38') and Karl Toko Ekambi putting the lid on a solid display with an injury-time clincher on the counter (90'+2).
It could have gone differently for Guingamp had captain Jimmy Briand's penalty, awarded for handball by Angers captain Cheick Ndoye, not come back off Alexandre Letellier - and the post (88') - just minutes before Cameroon international Toko Ekambi made certain sure of the result with a low angled finish past Karl Johnsson.
The victory was just recompense for Angers, who have gone close in recent league defeats to high-flyers Paris and Monaco - and they will have a second chance against one of those sides as they look to claim the Loire valley club's first-ever piece of top-flight silverware.
THE PLAYER: Alexandre Letellier
The Angers 'keeper may not have had that much to do as his side bossed matters going forward, but he stepped up when needed, tipping Briand's penalty onto the post with a sharp dive to prevent the match from going into extra-time and potentially penalties.
THE STAT: 3 out of 6
This match was Angers SCO's third semi-final appearance in the Coupe de France in the last six seasons, Moulin's side having lost 3-1 at home to Paris Saint-Germain in 2011 and 3-2 away to Rennes in 2014.
