Hoarau the hero as PSG go through
Guillaume Hoarau came off the bench to score the only goal of the game to give Paris Saint-Germain a 1-0 win over Braga on Thursday and see PSG join Marseille in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.
Hoarau emerged from the bench with 13 minutes remaining, and took just another four to make a decisive impact.
Lurking at the back post when Clément Chantôme bent in a free-kick, PSG's leading scorer merely had to head into an empty net after Braga keeper Eduardo badly misjudged the flight of the ball.
After a goalless first leg, the game in Portugal was equally keenly-contested, though the home side would have taken an early lead had Mickaël Landreau not leapt acrobatically to tip Paulo Cesar's viciously dipping drive onto the crossbar on 13 minutes.
PSG, who started with Hoarau, Claude Makelele, Jérôme Rothen and Ludovic Giuly all on the bench, also had their moments, and Clément Chantôme was unfortunate to see a delightfully-judged 28th-minute free-kick come back off the woodwork.
The hosts pressed after the interval, but despite seeing Mamadou Sakho go off at half-time with an ankle injury, PSG held out before Hoarau stole the show with his third goal of the competition to see them into Friday's quarter-final draw at UEFA headquarters in Switzerland.
