UEFA Champions League semi-finalists last season, Monaco have just a point from their opening two group-stage matches this term, and find themselves five points behind their Matchday 3 opponents, who sit atop Group G.

They have also already slipped six points adrift of Ligue 1 Conforama leaders Paris Saint-Germain, losing more ground with last Friday's 3-2 loss at Olympique Lyonnais.

Jardim told media things must change at the Stade Louis II.

"Personally, I have been through a lot of difficult times. You can't be champions of France every year, but it's tougher for the players who have just arrived. When you arrive at a club that is French champion, everyone has dreams.

"When I see them, they're all friends, but the problem is they lack the confidence to do things well. You have to stay at the level required to be champions of France. Sometimes you are down, but you have to work to get back, that's life."

Following his trans-Atlantic trip during the international break to help Colombia clinch their 2018 FIFA World Cup place, Radamel Falcao was rested for the game at Lyon.

Ligue 1 Conforama's leading marksman, who has 12 goals in just eight outings this term, will return to the starting line-up as Monaco seek the win that will breathe life into their European ambitions.

"It's a key match. We need to win to be able to progress. If we don't win, it'll be difficult to get top spot and we'll undoubtedly have to go for second," said Jardim, who saw his team taken apart 3-0 by Porto in their last European outing.

"Besiktas are Turkish champions, a team with a lot of experience and quality with players like Adriano, Quaresma, Pepe. They're a team that's not doing well in the league but who are in front in the Champions League. We'll need to win to qualify for the next round."
