OL to battle CSKA, OM get Bilbao
Ligue 1 Conforama's remaining UEFA Europa League representatives discovered their matches for the round of 16 on Friday, with Lyon set to face Russian side CSKA Moscow while Marseille take on the Spaniards of Athletic Bilbao.
Friday afternoon's draw at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, yielded some interesting match-ups, with Olympique Lyonnais drawn to face the might of CSKA Moscow as they look to go a step further towards playing in the final at the Groupama Stadium in May.
OL will have the advantage of playing the return leg at home on Thursday, March 15 following the opener in Russia a week earlier on March 8. Lyon and CSKA - who beat Red Star Belgrade 1-0 on aggregate in the round of 32, have never faced off in European competition before.
Meanwhile OM will take on Spanish side Athletic Bilbao knowing they will have to make their mark in the first match on March 8 before playing the return leg at the San Mamés a week later.
The sides have met before, with OM crashing out of the Europa League round of 32 after losing 1-0 at home in the first leg and then drawing 1-1 in the return leg - in Spain. Bilbao are struggling somewhat in La Liga, currently sitting in 14th place, but José Ángel Ziganda's side topped Group J before beating Spartak Moscow 4-2 on aggregate.
