Lyon gained much confidence from their performance in beating Madrid 1-0 at the Stade Gerland three weeks ago, but nobody in the OL camp is under any illusions about the size of task that awaits them against a side that has won it’s last three games, scoring fourteen goals in the process.
With the incentive of reaching a final that will be played in their own Santiago Bernabéu stadium, the Spanish media are confident that Manuel Pellegrini’s side will overturn the one-goal deficit and march on to the last eight. But while stopping players of the quality of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuaín and Kaká from playing may well be impossible, it will be a long way back for the hosts if Lyon can find a way past Iker Casillas at the other end.
‘Here to win’
Claude Puel urged his players to concentrate solely on the job in hand and not be distracted by their opponents’ awesome home record. “We have to play our own game. We are capable of scoring goals and putting them under pressure. We must go out with the intention of scoring a goal because if we don’t find the net, we won’t qualify.”
“There are no favourites, although if there were, it would be Real Madrid because they are playing at home. I’m not worried about the atmosphere, that’s not important. We have to believe in our chances. We have come here to win the tie.”
“One thing that might affect the Madrid players is the fact that the final is being played here, but we wouldn’t mind coming back here either.”
‘Extra motivation’
César Delgado produced his best performance in a Lyon shirt in the first-leg, and after appearing as a substitute in Saturday’s disappointing draw at Boulogne, the Argentine is fit and raring to go. “It’s not every day that you get to play in a stadium like the Bernabéu. It is an extra motivation for all of us.”
“We know that if we are fully focused and don’t allow them to play the way they want to then anything can happen. We must defend our lead and look for the goal at the other end that can help us relax.”
Lyon are out to banish the bitter memory of last year’s 5-2 hammering in Barcelona at the same stage of the competition, and they will draw confidence from the fact that they have never lost to Madrid in five previous confrontations.
Michel Bastos did not travel with the rest of the squad due to a thigh injury, and the Brazilian joins long-term injured pair Cléber Anderson and Francois Clerc in missing the match. Meanwhile, Lyon old-boy Karim Benzema will not feature for the hosts, having failed to recover from an adductor injury in time.
