Bordeaux take semi-final place

Coupe de la Ligue

Girondins de Bordeaux made it three teams through to the Coupe de la Ligue quarter-finals as they saw off En Avant Guingamp 3-2 in a nail-biting tie on Wednesday.

Girondins de Bordeaux 3-2 EA Guingamp

After AS Nancy-Lorraine and AS Monaco had gone through 24 hours earlier, it was the visitors to the Matmut Atlantique who initially looked as if they might be joining them in the last four.

The game was just 11 minutes old when Nicolas Pallois conceded a corner. The ball was swung over by Thibault Giresse, whose father, Alain, is a Bordeaux legend, and Sloan Privat muscled his way past Igor Lewczuk to head home (11').

Niil de Pauw came close to adding a second just three minutes later, but sent a half-volley narrowly wide, and Bordeaux took advantage. Maxime Poundje's quick throw-in took Guingamp by surprise, and François Kamano picked up the ball and fired goalwards - an unfortunate touch off Jérémy Sorbon did not help Romain Salin in the Guingamp goal (16').

Salin was in the right place shortly afterwards to deny Gaëtan Laborde (27'), but the young Bordeaux forward was not to be denied. After Youssef Sabaly won a free-kick, Valentin Vada's superb delivery left Laborde with an easy finish to put the hosts in front (35').

Salin was again called upon to kick away a Malcom effort before the break (43'), but was beaten once more by Laborde in the second half. A mistake by Sorbon led to Malcom picking up the ball high up the pitch, and he picked out Laborde at the near post to give Bordeaux a two-goal cushion (65').

They needed it too. After a spell of pressure, Nicolas Benezet pulled one back with two minutes left to set up a frantic finish, smashing a powerful volley beyond Jérôme Prior, but EAG could not find the equaliser that would have taken the tie to penalties.

THE PLAYER: Gaëtan Laborde
Two goals and a tireless display from the Bordeaux forward.

Bordeaux are through to the last four for the second successive year, and the eighth time in the club's history. They lost 5-1 to LOSC Lille in last season's semi-final.
