Guingamp make OL pay the penalty
Guingamp beat Olympique Lyonnais on penalties to end OL's dream of lifting the Coupe de la Ligue trophy in their own stadium at the start of April.
Olympique Lyonnais 2-2 EA Guingamp (Guingamp win 4-3 on penalties)
Nabil Fekir and Mathieu Valbuena were the Lyon players to miss in the shootout, while Nill De Pauw, like Valbuena a scorer in normal time, was the only player to fail to net for the visitors. Guingamp's other goal in the regulation 90 minutes had been scored by Ludovic Blas, who was sent off late on for a nasty foul on Lucas Tousart.
Blas' goal came in the 21st minute as the UEFA EURO Under-19 champion with France made the most of a Maciej Rybus error and beat Mathieu Gorgelin from six metres out. Valbuena equalised two minutes before the interval, played in by Nabil Fekir, who pounced on a Jérémy Sorbon mistake to create the goal. OL coach Bruno Genesio, in a foul mood, was sent to the stands before the break.
Valbuena had a great chance for OL's second midway through the second half, shaving the post with a curler, and then Gorgelin made a terrific save from a Thibault Giresse free-kick.
De Pauw has been in the goals for Guingamp this season and could barely believe his luck in the 70th minute when Gorgelin failed to deal with an innocuous situation and the Belgian pounced for his fourth goal in eight games.
Alexandre Lacazette had come off the bench for OL before the De Pauw goal and Lacazette forced the shootout as he powerfully finished off at the back post after Guingamp had failed to deal with a corner. OL, though, would fall at their first hurdle.
THE PLAYER: Nabil Fekir
Out of form, the French international was a starter for the second game running in all competitions. Though he did provide the assist for Valbuena, the attacker fired high over the bar in the penalty shootout.
THE STAT: 2
Guingamp have needed shootouts in both ties they have played in the Coupe de la Ligue this season, coming through 4-3 at Bastia in the previous round.
