Coupe de la Ligue quarter-finals

FC Sochaux-Montbéliard  1 - 1  AS Monaco - Monaco win 4-3 on penalties

THE MATCH

Second-tier Sochaux had accounted for both Dijon FCO and Olympique de Marseille in the previous two rounds and they were on course to produce another shock here when their leading scorer Faneva Andriatsima gave them the lead, firing past Danijel Subasic after being set up by Goran Karanovic (17').

However, a strong Monaco team piled on the pressure in the second period as they sought to avoid another defeat at the ground where they lost in the Coupe de France last season. They finally drew level with seven minutes to go, João Moutinho firing in after Christopher Dilo had saved the initial effort from Radamel Falcao.

The Colombian, on as a substitute, thought he had won it for Monaco shortly after but the goal was ruled out for an offside against Guido Carrillo in the build-up, and the tie went to penalties after the 90 minutes ended all square.

The first five kicks were all scored before Marco Ilaimaharitra struck the post to leave Monaco 3-2 up. Carrillo had the chance to win it for Monaco but Dilo denied him, only for Moussa Sao to blaze over the bar and allow Leonardo Jardim's side to win the shoot-out 4-3.

Sochaux have had some great results in shoot-outs this season and in previous years - they had already won three ties on penalties in the Coupe de la Ligue this season and also won the Coupe de la Ligue final and Coupe de France final on penalties in the last decade - so this is a win to be celebrated for Monaco.

THE PLAYER: João Moutinho

The Portugal midfielder got the crucial equaliser and took his penalty brilliantly in the shoot-out.

THE STAT: 14

Monaco remain on course to win a first trophy in 14 years - their last silverware came when they beat Sochaux in the 2003 Coupe de la Ligue final.
