Nice dumped out by Bordeaux
Two goals from Gaëtan Laborde helped Girondins de Bordeaux beat Ligue 1 leaders OGC Nice 3-2 in the round of 16 of the Coupe de la Ligue on Wednesday evening.
Girondins de Bordeaux 3 - 2 OGC Nice
Bordeaux were eager to bounce back from successive home defeats at the hands of LOSC and AS Monaco and they got off to a great start as they found themselves 2-0 up by the midway point in the first half at the Matmut Atlantique.
First Malcom slipped in Jaroslav Plasil and the Bordeaux captain poked the ball past the advancing Walter Benítez, the ball just crossing the line despite the best efforts of Arnaud Souquet to clear. Then Laborde followed in to score after a Jérémy Menez shot had been pushed out by Benítez.
Nice responded and Mario Balotelli, restored to the starting line-up, forced a good save from home goalkeeper Jérôme Prior before they reduced the arrears three minutes from half-time. Bordeaux gave possession away cheaply in midfield and Balotelli lifted a ball into the box for Alassane Pléa, who got a fortunate break off Nicolas Pallois and stabbed a shot past Prior.
To their credit, Jocelyn Gourvennec's side restored their two-goal advantage 10 minutes into the second half with a goal that was almost identical to their second. Again Menez saw his shot pushed out by Benítez and again Laborde was on hand to convert the rebound. It was his fifth of the season in all competitions.
Nice, who had made seven changes from their weekend draw at Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1, pulled another goal back from the penalty spot with seven minutes to go. Substitute Anastasios Donis was fouled by Igor Lewczuk and Balotelli sent Prior the wrong way from the spot for his eighth of the campaign. But it is Bordeaux, three-time winners of the trophy, who advance to the quarter-finals.
THE PLAYER: Gaëtan Laborde
The 22-year-old was handed a rare start in the absence of Diego Rolán and seized the opportunity with a crucial brace.
THE STAT: 2
This was just a second domestic defeat of the season for Nice.
