Olympico duo suffer Round of 16 exits

Coupe de la Ligue

Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais both crashed out of the Coupe de la Ligue on Wednesday at the hands of Stade Rennais FC and Montpellier Hérault SC. OGC Nice saw off LOSC Lille while Amiens SC progressed.

Stade Rennais FC 2-2 Olympique de Marseille  (Rennes win 4-3 on pens.)

Both teams came into the tie in good form, but Marseille seized the initiative through Kostas Mitroglou's early goal (13'), and the summer arrival from Olympiacos might have had a second but for Abdoulaye Diallo in the home goal (15').

Rennes took advantage to equalise with Benjamin André firing home Wahbi Khazri's free-kick (21') before the Tunisia international struck himself, bamboozling his international team-mate Aymen Abdennour before finishing (57').

Both teams had goals ruled out before Valère Germain, who had scored twice in the weekend win over AS Saint-Etienne, levelled ten minutes from the end of normal time. But the visitors missed twice in the shoot-out to the hosts' one, Benjamin Bourigeaud scoring the decisive spot-kick to take Rennes through 4-3.

Montpellier Hérault SC 4-1 Olympique Lyonnais

Olympique Lyonnais could not have asked for a better start than by piercing the hosts' renowned rearguard inside ten minutes. Myziane Maolida's stunning strike would have broken many a deadlock, thundering into the net just under the crossbar (10').

Montpellier soon regrouped and were level through Souleymane Camara's goal soon after (17') before the veteran forward put his side in front with a second - the lively Junior Sambia was the provider, skipping down the left before crossing for Camara to fire home (22').

He would have had a hat-trick inside 60 seconds before for Mathieu Gorgelin to push out his low shot (23') and the Lyon 'keeper then had to push over Sambia's long-range free-kick (39').

But the Montpellier man would not be denied for long, and sent a curling shot into the far corner of the net to give the hosts a handy lead at the break (45+1'). Kévin Bérigaud's successful penalty after Camara had been fouled (85') gave the scoreline a gloss Michel Der Zakarian's men deserved.

LOSC Lille 1-1 OGC Nice  (Nice win 3-2 on pens.)

Lille and Nice meet again in Ligue 1 Conforama in a week's time, and they will already be well acquainted with each other after an engaging contest at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.

Luiz Araujo's seventh-minute opener gave the hosts the initiative, though only a flying save from Kouakou Koffi prevented Alassane Pléa equalising before the break with a superb long-range curler (38').

Koffi again preserved Lille's advantage when Bassem Srarfi (52') and Mario Balotelli (55') tried to wipe it out before he was beaten by the Italy international, who fired home his fourth goal in as many competitive domestic outings after he had been picked out by Arnaud Souquet (58').

Yoan Cardinale's save from Anwar El Ghazi (80') pushed the tie to a penalty shoot-out, and the Nice goalkeeper proved the hero, saving two home spot-kick's before Yves Bissouma's wild effort missed the target and sent Nice through.

 Amiens SC 2-1 Tours FC

The Ligue 1 Conforama side made light work of their second-tier opponents at the Stade de la Licorne. Christophe Pélissier's men were two-up by half-time thanks to goals from Bachibou Koita (16') and Emmanuel Bourgaud (45+1'). Tours, who had suprisingly beaten FC Nantes in the previous round, pulled one back through Daniel Mancini with seconds left (90').
