Round of 32: Lille through, Nantes stunned

Coupe de la Ligue

LOSC Lille got a morale-boosting Coupe de la Ligue win on Wednesday as did fellow strugglers Stade Rennais FC, but high-flying FC Nantes and AS Saint-Etienne were surprise fallers at the Round of 32 hurdle.

Coupe de la Ligue, Round of 32

RC Strasbourg Alsace 1-1 AS Saint-Etienne  (5-4 on pens.)

Though the visitors had the upper hand in terms of league position, their recent defeat to ESTAC Troyes and run of two defeats in three league games suggested Strasbourg had an opportunity.

Stéphane Bahoken's 35th-minute goal looked like it might be enough for the hosts until Hernani levelled six minutes from time to force a shoot-out.

However, Alexandre Oukidja parried Romain Hamouma's opening spot-kick, and to rub salt into Les Verts' wounds, it was former Olympique Lyonnais man Bakary Koné who struck the decisive blow.

 ESTAC Troyes 1-2 Amiens SC

Amiens made progress at the expense of their Ligue 1 counterparts after taking the lead through Moussa Konaté (40'). François Bellugou equalised early in the second half (49'), but veteran defender Julian Ielsch's strike ten minutes from time gave the visitors the win.

Dijon FCO 1-2 Stade Rennais FC

Rennes recovered from the blow of conceding a 15th-minute opener to the hosts' Frédéric Sammaritano to secure their place in the next round. The Breton side still did not make things easy though. After Wahbi Khazri had equalised (43'), it was not until Adrien Hunou struck a minute from time (89') that Dijon were done for.

Without a win since the opening day of the season, Lille removed some of the clouds over them, but only just as they made progress via a shoot-out against northern neighbours Valenciennes FC. Goals from Yassine Benzia (14') and Junior Alonso (74') meant Marcelo Bielsa's men led twice, but it took a decisive penalty from Thiago Mendes to see them through.

Nantes may be the talk of Ligue 1 Conforama, but Claudio Ranieri's men were given a rude surprise. Two-nil down inside six minutes at second-tier side Tours FC, Nantes conceded a third on 19 minutes. Lucas Lima's penalty reduced their arrears (35') but Anthony Walongwa's second-half dismissal for a second bookable offence (57') put paid to their hopes.

Toulouse went through, but suffered the shock of being pegged back by second division Clermont having built a handy lead through François Moubandjé (21') and Yaya Sanogo (25'). However, having conceded twice themselves Pascal Dupraz's men then scored twice more through Max-Alain Gradel (39') and Ola Toivnoen (58').

Matthieu Dossevi's goal (65') was all FC Metz required to see off third-tier outfit Red Star FC, while Angers SCO needed Mateo Pavlovic's 92nd-minute winner to emerge victorious from a five-goal thriller with Domino's Ligue 2's AS Nancy-Lorraine.
