Sainté beaten by Nancy
Maurice Dalé's first-half penalty for AS Nancy-Lorraine dumped AS Saint-Etienne out of the Coupe de la Ligue in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
AS Saint-Etienne 0 - 1 AS Nancy-Lorraine
Sainté coach Christophe Galtier had made clear his desire to go on another run in a competition his side memorably won in 2013 but they were chasing this game on a bitterly cold night at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard after falling behind in the 18th minute.
Antony Robic was sent tumbling by Léo Lacroix as he made his way into the penalty area and Dalé stepped up to expertly convert his spot-kick, giving Stéphane Ruffier no chance as he netted his second goal of the season.
The home side then spent the rest of the evening trying in vain to force an equaliser, with Robert Beric diverting a Loïc Perrin shot off target early in the second half, Ole Selnaes forcing a save from Sergey Chernik and then Romain Hamouma having the ball in the net at the death only to be denied by an offside flag.
After winning the trophy in 2013 and then being beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in each of the last three seasons, it is the first time since October 2011 that ASSE have lost to anyone other than the capital club in the competition.
THE PLAYER: Stéphane Ruffier
Ruffier has so often rescued Saint-Etienne but he couldn't keep out Dalé's crucial penalty here and then had to grit his teeth towards the end of the game after appearing to hurt his thigh.
THE STAT: 9
It is the first time in nine years - since 2007-08 - that Nancy have reached the last eight in this competition.
