Ahamada gives Corgnet a helping hand
By D. Crossan
Benjamin Corgnet scored the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time, profiting from a goalkeeping error as Lorient inflicted Toulouse's fourth straight 1-0 away loss in all competitions.
FC Lorient 1-0 Toulouse FC
The breakthrough arrived in the final minute of the first half as Ali Ahamada, maintained in goal despite Olivier Blondel's recovery from a thigh injury, pushed Corgnet's near-post shot into his own net. Jérémie Aliadière shrugged off young Steeve Yago, the teenager playing with Aymen Abdennour absent with a heel problem, before pulling the ball back for his strike partner to net for his third goal of the season. Aliadière had also set up Corgnet's previous goal in the 2-0 Week 13 home success over Lille.
Lorient good value for lead
Lorient dominated the first-half chance count and were full value for their lead. Ahamada saved from home full-back Pedrinho as the Brazilian went for placement rather than power from fine service by Corgnet. Aliadière then headed narrowly wide from a hanging Maxime Barthelmé cross from the left.
Lorient were pretty well doing what Toulouse had done to Olympique Lyonnais in the 3-0 Week 14 win, not allowing TFC any time on the ball. Ahamada got fingertips to a Jouffre drive from 25 metres before producing a reaction stop with his legs to deny Corgent from the ensuing corner after the ball had fallen to the former Dijon man off visiting skipper Jonathan Zebina.
Toulouse threatened only sporadically and Etienne Capoue fired over from inside the six-yard when the ball reached him from a corner at an awkward height to control for the French international midfielder.
Quercia nearly back among the goals
There were few chances in the second half, Zebina blocking an Aliadière effort on 69 minutes. The former Arsenal forward has not scored now in his last five games. He's set himself a target of ten goals and ten assists for the season and showed his unselfish streak by squaring for sub Julien Quericia inside the final ten minutes. Querica, who only recently returned from a 15-month injury lay-off, was denied a first goal since the winner at PSG on the opening day of last season by the feet of Ahamada.
TFC substitute Emmanuel Rivière had a shot blocked as Alain Casanova's side disappointed. Lorient kept their third clean sheet of the season and kept TFC top scorer WIssam Ben Yedder exceptionally quiet as his side fell to their fourth straight 1-0 defeat in all competitions.
Lorient are 11th on 21 points after their second win in 11 in all competitions, now six points clear of the drop zone and only a point adrift of Toulouse who have lost four of their last five league games.
