Alexandre Lacazette has signed a five-year deal with Arsenal for €60m - a record for both the London club and Lyon, for whom Lacazette has shone since graduating from the youth academy in 2010.

Lacazette, 26, has long been the jewel in the crown of Olympique Lyonnais' golden generation of home-grown talent, but his stay at the Parc OL came to an end on Wednesday as he signed with EPL giants Arsenal FC on a five-year, €60m deal that broke the transfer records for both clubs.

Number 30

"I am, of course, delighted and very proud too because Arsenal is a legendary club," declared Lacazette, who made 171 league appearances (100 goals) in his eights seasons with Lyon and who is the 30th Frenchman to play for Arsenal. "Throughout my childhood, thanks to Thierry Henry and other French players, I always dreamed of playing for this club so that dream has been fulfilled. In addition, there are quite a few French players here, which makes it easier to settle in. In my opinion, Arsenal is also the club that plays the best football in England so I really wanted to play here."

Lacazette's excellent technique, positional sense and composure on the ball have made him a stand-out in France's top flight, bagging a league-high 27 goals in season 2014-15 and earning the UNFP Trophy for Player of the Year in that same campaign.

End of an era

His departure comes confirms the end of the era that saw the club tighten the belt on big-name signings and divert resources in to the ambitious Parc OL project. President Jean-Michel Aulas put his faith in home-grown talent like Lacazette, Corentin Tolisso, Maxime Gonalons and Clément Grenier to see the club through the building period.

However, now that the state-of-the-art arena is operational, the club can afford to cash in on their investment and this record transfer for Lacazette - which followed hot on the heels of Tolisso's €41m move to Bayern Munich, a record for the Bavarian club and the Bundesliga, and former captain Gonalons' move to AS Roma - should see the club bring in several more new faces to join recruits Mariano Diaz (Real Madrid), Bertrand Traoré (Chelsea), Marçal (Benfica) and Ferland Mendy (Le Havre).
