Big win for Bordeaux
Under-pressure Bordeaux boss Jean Tigana enjoyed a 3-0 home win over strugglers Auxerre. Alou Diarra, Anthony Modeste and Jaroslav Plasil netted for Les Girondins.
Czech international Plasil whistled one just wide early on as Bordeaux started brightly in an attempt to put a run of a single point from their last three league games behind them.
13 minutes was not unlucky for the home side as France skipper Diarra eased nerves as he latched on to a Michaël Ciani flick-on off a Geraldo Wendel corner. Diarra finished at the second attempt.
Bordeaux’s confidence levels did not seem to improve before the break, however, despite near misses from Lamine Sané and Fernando.
It took until the game’s 53rd minute for Bordeaux to make themselves comfortable. Fahid Ben Khalfallah played in Modeste and the referee gave a penalty after a challenge by visiting goalkeeper Olivier Sorin.
Modeste himself stepped up to take it and converted with a low side-footer for his club-leading 10th league goal of the seaon. A minute later Modeste was denied a second of the game as Sorin gained the upper hand in a one-on-one.
Shortly afterwards Plasil struck the bar as Bordeaux began to cut loose for once in a while. Sorin then denied Modeste on two occasions as Tigana’s side pressed for a third goal that would guarantee a fifth home success of the season.
In the 79th minute Plasil got that goal. The two-footed midfielder made the most of unselfish work from the modest Modeste and curled a left-footed effort beyond Sorin from 25 metres out.
Bordeaux climbed to tenth in the league while Auxerre fell to 17th and just a point above the bottom three with 13 Ligue 1 games remaining this season.
