Bordeaux up and running

Girondins de Bordeaux scored either side of the break to pick up their first Ligue 1 Conforama win of the season with a 2-0 defeat of FC Metz on Saturday.

Girondins de Bordeaux 2-0 FC Metz

Both sides had failed to win on the opening weekend — Bordeaux drew with Angers SCO, Metz were beaten by En Avant Guingamp — and the cutting edge they lacked in Week 1 was again evident.

A number of free-kicks were whisked into the visitors' penalty area, but Les Girondins failed to connect, and despite overwhelming possession and a promisingly lively Malcom, Jocelyn Gourvennec's men toiled.

Just as hope they would find an opener before the break had all but faded, Valentin Vada provided the solution. François Kamano picked out the Argentine midfielder on the edge of the box, and Vada ensured Bordeaux's first shot on target ended in the back of the net as he drilled a low shot beyond Thomas Didillon (44').

Malcom was at the heart of Bordeaux's second. The Brazilian picked up the ball, skipped beyond Benoît Assou-Ekotto and fired a cross in front of goal where Younousse Sankharé finished from close range (64').

Malcom tested Didillon (73') as did Alexandre Mendy — the latter with a spectacular overhead volley (76') — as Bordeaux cantered home.

The young Brazilian has hit the ground running. He was the chief tormentor of Metz, and had he shown a little more coolness when put clean through by Jaroslav Plasil in the closing stages, he would have had the goal his performance deserved (90+1').

Bordeaux have lost just two times in their last 49 league games at home to Metz, winning 35 of those encounters.
