Montpellier's European hopes sustained a blow as they were beaten 3-1 by a Bordeaux side that was clinical in front of goal.

Montpellier Hérault SC 1-3 Girondins de Bordeaux

THE MATCH

Only Bordeaux's second win in eight, this result owed everything to the finishing of Gus Poyet's players as they avenged the 2-0 loss to Montpellier in Bordeaux from earlier in the season.  Only Paris Saint-Germain have conceded fewer goals than Montpellier this season so it was surprising to see Michel Der Zakarian's five-man backline ship three to opponents that hadn't played well of late.

With Rennes, Nice and Nantes all having dropped points this weekend it was an opportunity for Montpellier and the home team had the first chance as Isaac Mbenza's free-kick flicked off Younousse Sankharé and struck the Bordeaux crossbar.

Bordeaux made the most of the let-off as Martin Braithwaite (9') gave Les Girondins the lead. Pablo flicked on a corner and the Danish international was in the right place at the right time to finish from close range. François Kamano (31') was denied a second by Benjamin Lecomte.

The visitors (48') wasted another chance when Braithwaite miscued a header but a minute later Kamano got his goal. After collecting Lukas Lerager's diagonal ball he beat Lecomte with a ferocious shot.

Benoît Costil made saves from Elysse Skhiri (62') and Mbenza (69') before Bordeaux wrapped up the points (78') thanks to Soualiho Meïté. The midfielder, on loan from Monaco, accepted Diego COntento's cut-back and side-footed home.

Montpellier pulled one back (88') as Skhiri curled in a fine shot and there was still time for MHSC to be awarded a penalty as Karim Abed decided Paul Lasne had been fouled. Costil went the right way to deny sub Souleymane Camara.

THE PLAYER: François Kamano

The young Guinean international has scored four of Bordeaux's last eight Ligue 1 Conforama goals. His strike took him onto six for the season, equalling his top division PB posted in 2016-2017.

THE STAT: 7

This was Montpellier's first defeat in seven home outings since falling 3-1 to Metz on December 16 2017.
