Bourigeaud, Rennes' new bright young thing

Stade Rennais have a habit of providing a stage on which young talent can flourish, and after the likes of Petr Cech, Yoann Gourcuff and Ousmane Dembélé, Benjamin Bourigeaud could be the next household name to emerge from the Breton club.

Rennes' highly-productive youth academy cannot lay claim to Bourigeaud as one of their own. Born in Calais, Bourigeaud spent 13 years at RC Lens, and even featured in their 2014/15 Ligue 1 Conforama campaign, scoring twice in 20 appearances. He has already gone one better this term in his first seven league outings for his new club where the speed at which success has come has surprised even him.

"I wasn’t expecting it, but I was ready for it. I was lucky enough to score against Lyon here and at the Velodrome. Those are moments that come to you instinctively, when you can make the difference against any team, you try to do so," the 23-year-old told The Ligue 1 Show on beIN SPORTS.

"I'm happy to have found my feet at Rennes. It wasn't easy to leave my native region but in terms of my progression I think it was needed, my only wish was to play in Ligue 1, unfortunately we missed out on that with Lens so I had to make a decision to further my career."

The presence of former Lens team-mates Ludovic Baal and Dimitri Cavaré has helped ease his adaptation, while his performances on the pitch have quickly endeared him to the Roazhon Park faithful, who are aware they could be seeing another star in the making.

"He's can become a complete player, technically he is a real asset, especially from set-pieces," said Rennes boss Christian Gourcuff. "Benjamin arrived at a point in his career where he needed to take a step up, even if he had played briefly in Ligue 1 with Lens he needed to take that step and become a top flight player."

"I wanted to prove both to myself and to others that I'm not a Ligue 2 player, so I signed here because I knew I could continue my progression in Rennes," added Bourigeaud, who will face SM Caen in their Ligue 1 Conforama Week 8 encounter on Saturday. "The coach has shown a lot of confidence in me in the first few games, which has allowed me to find confidence too."
