Debut Debuchy goal helps ASSE past Amiens
Mathieu Debuchy scored on his AS Saint-Etienne debut (62') before Rémy Cabella added another (85') as Les Verts climbed into 11th with a 2-0 win over struggling Amiens SC.
Amiens SC 0-2 AS Saint-Etienne
After a busy winter transfer window, Saint-Etienne handed a debut to Debuchy, with Neven Subotic and Yann M'Vila turning out for their second and fourth Ligue 1 Conforama games for Les Verts respectively. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Jean-Louis Gasset's looked less than fluent in the opening half-hour, with Loïc Perrin's tame header from a Debuchy free-kick the closest they came (5') to breaking the deadlock before Robert Beric - in his second spell at the club as of January - came off second-best when one-on-one with home goalkeeper Régis Gurtner (19'). Cabella had a claim for a free-kick on the edge of the box waved away by referee Thomas Léonard (28') and the half-time whistle blew with ASSE in the ascendancy but with no goal to show for it.
The travelling support were growing audibly frustrated when Beric fired another effort wide on the hour (60'), but Debuchy settled their nerves soon after, reacting quickest to Jonathan Bamba's parried shot to fire the opener home, high into the net (62'). Debuchy burst forward repeatedly, and nearly created another when he fired the ball into the box for Cabella, who found Bamba with a delicious pass, but the winger fired over with the goal at his mercy (77'). Another Debuchy ball in late on fell to Vincent Pajot, and he slipped it to Cabella who rounded the scoring off at 2-0 with a neat finish (85').
THE PLAYER: Mathieu Debuchy
Debuchy was at the heart of most of Sainté's dangerous play, showing little signs of the ring rust that might have been expected having spent most of the last four seasons in Arsenal's reserves. Arguably France's best right-back when he left LOSC for Newcastle in 2013, Saint-Etienne may just have secured the bargain of the season in securing his services.
THE STAT: 7
This was Saint-Etienne's first away win in seven Ligue 1 Conforama matches. The last time Sainté picked up a win on the road was in September, when Bamba scored a penalty to give them a 1-0 win at Dijon FCO.
