Gameiro hat-trick as Bordeaux battered
By D. Crossan
Kévin Gameiro struck a hat-trick against the club he could have joined in January as Lorient beat Bordeaux 5-1. There were red cards for Franco Sosa of Lorient and Cédric Carrasso of Bordeaux in a breathtaking game.
Morgan Amalfitano got the ball rolling for Lorient in the 14th minute. Beating the offside trap, he brought down a long ball forward on his chest, then with his second touch delicately lobbed Carrasso with a millimetre-perfect finish.
Lynel Kitambala nearly made it two almost straight away, his shot cleared off the line by Les Girondins centre-half Michaël Ciani. Lorient were rampant, their eye-catching, crowd pleasing football a joy to behold.
Gameiro scores two in three minutes
Kitambala laid on the second goal on 35 minutes, outpacing the Bordeaux defence to latch on to a Franco Sosa ball over the top and squaring for Gameiro to tap in. Bordeaux’s high defensive line was frequently troubled by the pace of the Lorient attackers and French international forward Gameiro calmly slotted home his second of the game three minutes later, taking the ball around Carrasso after Ciani had failed to cut out another ball from deep.
Two minutes later Bordeaux pulled one back as Fernando finished off Jaroslav Plasil’s free-kick with an excellent header that carried too much sting for Fabien Audard. Czech international Plasil moved on to eight assists for the season. Only a stunning save from Carrasso denied Gameiro a third before the half-time but the diminutive poacher’s time would come after the interval.
Penalty retake and Sosa red card
Lorient were reduced to ten men when Franco Sosa was sent off in the 59Th minute. Plasil handled the full-back’s free-kick inside the area. A penalty was awarded and Arnold Mvuemba tucked it away, only for the referee to order a retake for encroachment. Sosa lost his cool and was dismissed for a second yellow card.
Mvuemba stepped up again and the midfielder showed plenty of sang froid as he went down the middle again and Carrasso dived the wrong way.
Gameiro up to 15 for season, Carrasso off
Even reduced to ten men there was still time for Gameiro to add a flourish. He found substitute Mathias Autret on the right and continued his run to connect with the youngster’s cross for his 15th of the season, leaving him just a single strike adrift of Moussa Sow of Lille at the top of the Ligue 1 scoring chart.
Still the drama was not over as, in the final minute of stoppage time at the end of the game, Carrasso handled outside his area. He had committed a similar offence earlier in the half and was yellow-carded both times. It means Carrasso will now have to serve a suspension.
Lorient climbed from 11th to seventh with the three points. Bordeaux dropped from ninth to 12th.
