Late Briand winner spoils Gasset's night
Jean-Louis Gasset's first game as Saint-Etienne coach resulted in a cruel 2-1 defeat at Guingamp. Home captain Jimmy Briand completed the turnaround as the Breton club worsened ASSE's plight.
EA Guingamp 2-1 AS Saint-Etienne
Saint-Etienne published a communiqué before kick-off announcing that Gasset was stepping up from assistant to Julien Sablé. Gasset saved Montpellier from relegation last season and the veteran knows he has another salvage operation on his hands. Sablé had collected only two points from seven matches after replacing Oscar Garcia.
Against a Guingamp side unbeaten in four matches, it was always likely to be difficult for the visitors and a negative result looked on the cards from the moment burly forward Alexander Söderlund got himself sent off in the 24th minute for a challenge on Lucas Deaux. The Norwegian became the seventh Saint-Etienne player to see red this season.
Jessy Moulin was in goal for Saint-Etienne as Stéphane Ruffier was banned following his red card against Monaco and Moulin saved well from Jonathan Martins Pereira ten minutes before the break.
Guingamp hadn't done enough with their extra man and were punished on 67 minutes when visiting captain Rémy Cabella picked out Hernani and the Brazilian midfielder beat Guingamp goalkeeper Karl-Johan Johnsson. The advantage lasted only three minutes as Nicolas Benezet made up for giving the ball away for the Saint-Etienne goal by scoring with a cross that took Moulin by surprise.
Typical of Saint-Etienne's current luck was the concession of a 95th-minute winner as Yannis Salibur's deflected cross fell perfectly for Briand to head home from close range. Guingamp are eighth at the turn of the year, while Saint-Etienne are just a point above the bottom three.
THE PLAYER: Jessy Moulin
Saint-Etienne's back-up goalkeeper had only played 37 minutes off football, following Ruffier's red against Monaco, since early February. The 31-year-old is an influential figure in the dressing room and will be mortified he allowed Benezet's cross to deceive him.
THE STAT: 10
Saint-Etienne have now gone 10 Ligue 1 Conforama matches without a win, collecting a mere three points in that time. It is the longest winless run in the division.
