LFP enforce Barton ban
Olympique de Marseille fans will have to wait before they see Joey Barton in action in Ligue 1 after the LFP's Disciplinary Commission confirmed the midfielder's 12-match suspension does apply on the French side of the Channel.
Barton was sent off while playing for English club Queen's Park Rangers on the final day of the last Premier League season, and subsequently handed a 12-match ban. There was speculation the suspension would not be enforced following his move to OM last month, but the LFP have decided the 30-year-old will have to wait before making his L1 debut.
"When Joey Barton was transferred from Queen's Park Rangers to Olympique de Marseille, the English FA transmitted the disciplinary sanction to which Barton was subject," read an LFP statement, which explained its decision was in keeping with FIFA guidelines in such situations. "Consequently, the player Joey Barton, having served three games of the 12-match ban, is suspended for the next nine matches in national competition."
Though Barton will be available to coach Elie Baup for Europa League games, the ex-Everton, Manchester City and Newcastle United man is ineligible for league and Coupe de la Ligue encounters, and cannot now make his L1 bow until the Week 13 meeting with Girondins de Bordeaux.
