Lille, OM fall in Trophée des Champions warm-ups
24/07/2011
Lille and Marseille will both be looking to bounce back from friendly defeats when they clash in Wednesday's Trophée des Champions in Tangiers, while Bordeaux downed Real Betis 2-0.
Current Trophée des Champions holders Marseille were looking to prepare for Wednesday's clash against Lille with win over Italian side Udinese, but Didier Deschamps' men fell to a 2-1 defeat against last season's fourth-placed Serie A side in Bayonne's Kopa Baiona on Saturday.
Despite the result, Deschamps was upbeat about a performance that saw emerging youth academy graduate Chris Gadi make it 1-1 with a deft finish (49') after coming on at the break.
Deschamps: 'Headed in the right direction'
"There were lots of positives tonight, even though we conceded two avoidable goals," said the OM boss, whose side almost backed up their 1-0 Kopa Baiona win over Real Betis with a 2-2 draw when Loïc Rémy smashed a shot onto the bar in the 80th minute.
"We played these two matches to prepare for the Trophée des Champions on Wednesday, where there is the season's first trophy up for grabs. In terms of the work rate and attitude, I'm satisfied. Even though we don't have everything in place yet, the lads are headed in the right direction."
Reigning Ligue 1 champions Lille, who have won just one of their four pre-season outings, will also go into the new season's curtain-raiser in Tangiers looking to get back to winning ways after falling 1-0 to Saint-Etienne.
Ruffier denies Lille
Like OM, Rudi Garcia's Dogues almost rescued a late result when Senegalese midfielder Idrissa Gueye was denied by the woodwork but Les Verts' new 'keeper Stéphane Ruffier turned in an impressive performance to back up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's 20th-minute strike and secure a third-straight friendly win.
In other results, Bordeaux notched a 2-0 Kopa Baiona win over Real Betis - thanks to a Wendel free kick and a last-minute strike from Grégory Sertic - to get back to winning ways after going down 3-1 to Udinese in their only loss in five pre-season matches.
Pitroïpa on song
Meanwhile Rennes accounted for Breton rivals Lorient 2-1, newly signed Burkina Faso striker Jonathan Pitroïpa scoring the winner, while Sochaux downed Auxerre 2-0 and Evian got a first taste of Ligue 1 opposition for the season when they put an unanswered two goals past Nice.
Montpellier and Toulouse played out an exciting 2-2 draw and Caen's clash with third-tier club Cherbourg ended goalless while Brest drew 1-1 with Bosnian club Velez Mostar. Promoted Ajaccio fell 4-0 to Spanish side Real Sociedad and Nancy suffered their first defeat under new coach Jean Fernandez, 2-0 against German side Kaiserslautern.
