Lyon's Lopes: 'We need points urgently'
Olympique Lyonnais are desperate to slow AS Monaco's title defence on Friday and kickstart their own season, says OL goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.
Lyon have had a slow start to the season, and head into Week 9 in eighth place in the table, six points behind their upcoming opponents in second and a further three adrift of leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
They have picked up just two points from their last three Ligue 1 Conforama outings, frustratingly throwing away leads in their last two to draw 3-3 both times.
Those games — against Dijon FCO and at Angers SCO — are matches Bruno Genesio's men would have expected to win. The fact they surprisingly dropped points means taking something from their meeting with the champions becomes all the more crucial.
"We're in urgent need of points, especially against a direct rival for a European qualifying place," explained Lopes. "We have to take the three points that will enable us to pick up momentum and start a run of wins. We mustn't have doubts as that will just make things more difficult afterwards. We have to move forward hand-in-hand and be confident."

Self-belief is dwindling in Bruno Genesio's squad, however, having failed to win despite scoring six times in their last two league matches.
With a testing UEFA Europa League double-header with English Premier League outfit Everton looming and the Rhône derby against AS Saint-Etienne fast approaching in early November, a victory against Monaco would be more than welcome.
Lopes, however, admitted the principality side will provide a stern test.
"We're going to face one of the best French and European teams, they reached the Champions League semi-finals last season," the Portugal international said.
"They are very well prepared. We expect a great match, but my team are used to standing up and being counted in such moments. So, I'm confident."
