Maupay knee injury a 'bitter blow'
Nice's 16-year-old sensation Neal Maupay is to undergo surgery next Wednesday after snapping the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Les Aiglons coach Claude Puel called it a "bitter blow".
Maupay, the second-youngest Ligue 1 scorer in history after Saint-Etienne's Laurent Roussey, had netted three times in the league this season. The forward suffered the injury playing for Nice's reserves last Sunday against Marseille.
Maupay signed his first professional contract, a three-year deal, in January. Puel said: “It's a bitter blow for Neal and for us as we needed everybody for the final few matches of the season. The injury didn't seem serious and he carried on playing before going off. We've tried to protect him in terms of his amount of game time and the media pressure. At least now he'll be able to prepare for his school exams in peace.”
For the trip to Paris Saint-Germain this Sunday Puel will also be without forwards Xavier Pentecôte (knee) and Alexy Bosetti (suspended) as well as the attacking midfielder Eric Bauthéac.
