Monaco swoop for Italian starlet Pellegri
AS Monaco have secured the services of one of the most exciting young talents in the European game with the signing of Italian prodigy Pietro Pellegri from Genoa.
Pellegri, who is still just 16, has signed a long-term contract, Monaco said, as he joins from his hometown team.
Tall and powerful, Pellegri became the joint-youngest player to take part in a Serie A game when he turned out for Genoa aged just 15 years and 280 days in December 2016. He has since gone on to feature in 10 matches in Italy's top flight but Monaco said he had opted to move to the Stade Louis II because of the principality club's "sporting project".
"He has great qualities, great potential, and we are convinced that with time and hard work here he will become an important player," said Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev. "It is further proof that the work we have done here in recent seasons, the results we have had and the players who have emerged while wearing our jersey allow us to attract the biggest talents in European football."
Pellegri, who will be 17 in March, added: "I am very pleased to be joining Monaco. I was very quickly convinced by a project that allows young players like me to progress and flourish in the future. I am going to work hard to become an important player for the club in the future."
