Montpellier flying high on Toulouse win
Montpellier rocketed five places to provisional third with a 1-0 win over Toulouse on Saturday, club top scorer Olivier Giroud notching his fifth of the season.
It has been a great week for Montpellier, who bounced back from their 2-0 defeat in Lens in Week 12 first by booking a place in the semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue, 2-1 over Lille in midweek, before grinding out the 1-0 win over Toulouse on Saturday night to edge into the top three.
Giroud on target
While it was a match of few chances in which the two sides circled each other somewhat warily, Montpellier ace Olivier Giroud made the most of his opportunity in the 19th minute to make the difference.
Since signing for Montpellier in the summer, Marco Estrada has quickly made a name for himself with his dead-ball deliveries. True to form, it was the Chilean international whose free kick lured Toulouse ‘keeper Mathieu Valverde into an ill-fated aerial one-on-one with Giroud, the giant striker imposing himself to head home his fifth goal of the season (19’).
Tough times for the TFC
With just the one league win since their four-match winning streak at the beginning of the season, Alain Casanova’s Toulouse lacked the confidence and coherence to bounce back at the Stade de la Mosson and the score remained at 1-0 to see the TFC slip further down the table to ninth.
