Nantes take down Toulouse to go third

FC Nantes moved into third place in Ligue 1 Conforama with a 2-1 win over Toulouse FC on Saturday.

 FC Nantes 2-1 Toulouse FC

With a podium spot up for grabs, Nantes had added motivation to get back on track after their surprise 1-0 defeat at Dijon last time out.

They quickly started moving in the right direction. Emiliano Sala reached a through ball ahead of Alban Lafont, and then fired the ball into the box where Adrien Thomasson was able to fire home the opening goal (16').

That strike took Nantes into double figures, one shy of Toulouse's tally for the season at that point, and as both attacks struggled to break down the opposing defence, the game stagnated.

It burst into life again, however, around the hour mark. Against the run of play, Toulouse pulled level through Alexis Blin, who headed home from close range after Andy Delort had brought down a free-kick and crossed for his young team-mate (60').

Nantes, though, are made of still more resilient stuff and they moved ahead again — this time for good — through Sala.

The Argentine forward, who was playing his 100th Ligue 1 Conforama game, was ruthless as he latched onto Kelvin Amian's poor clearance, moved away from Issiaga Sylla and dispatched a shot beyond Lafont (67') to win it for Claudio Ranieri's side.

THE PLAYER: Emiliano Sala
It was a landmark night for the former Girondins de Bordeaux and SM Caen striker who seems to have finally found his niche in France at Nantes. A tireless runner for his team, his ability to take a chance have been invaluable for a side for whom goalscoring is not second nature.

Nantes have now won their last four league games at home, their best such run since November 2002-January 2003.
