Neymar expected back in time for World Cup

Ligue 1 Conforama > News

Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar is expected to be fit in time for Brazil's FIFA World Cup campaign in Russia, according to his father and agent, Neymar Santos Sr.

The forward, who has scored 19 Ligue 1 Conforama goals and assisted 13 since becoming the world's most expensive player in swapping Barcelona for PSG last summer, twisted his ankle in the capital club's 3-0 win over Olympique de Marseille last Saturday, and underwent surgery in his native Brazil this Saturday.

Succesful surgery

"Neymar Jr. underwent surgery today at the Materdei Hospital in Belo Horizonte," read a statement released by PSG during their Week 28 clash with ESTAC Troyes, which they won 2-0. "The operation, conducted by Doctor Rodrigo Lasmar, was successful. The operation consisted of the laying of a screw associated with a transplant fixed at the level of the lesion of the fifth metatarsal of the right foot."

"Re-education will begin immediately under the direction of a club physiotherapist. Neymar's injury will be assessed in six weeks' time to establish a possible date for his return to training."

End-of-season return?

The 26-year-old is sure to miss the second leg of PSG's UEFA Champions League last 16 clash with defending champions Real Madrid on Tuesday, then, with the final three games of the current Ligue 1 Conforama campaign - against Amiens SC, Stade Rennais FC and SM Caen - the target as the player looks to build up a head of steam for the tournament in Russia.

An opportunity for Draxler (l.)? The Germany World Cup winner has been restricted to 14 league starts this season.

Chance for Draxler

"We have to wait for the club's decision, PSG is waiting for the right moment," Neymar's father told
ESPN Brasil. "We didn't want to be in this situation, but we should try to recover Neymar as best we can."

Neymar's absence could prove something of an opportunity for Angel Di Maria and Julian Draxler; with Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappé all-but assured of their places in PSG's front three for the remainder of the season.
