Neymar: 'Make history'

Ligue 1 Conforama > Interviews

18 goals and 11 assists in just 17 Ligue 1 matches, wondrous free-kicks and breath-taking skills. We hear from the main man, Neymar…

The Brazilian has been lighting up football pitches since his arrival in France. On the scoresheet in the first match of every competition he has played for PSG, the Brazilian, who celebrated his 26th birthday this week, has enjoyed an emphatic start to life in the capital.

"I wasn't expecting things to go as well"

Neymar told This is Paris: "I wasn't expecting things to go as well as they have done so far, my stats with Paris Saint-Germain are great, but above all, I'm here to help the team, help my team-mates and try to do my best every day, every game, and that's the most important thing. It's the first time I've scored so much, but now I want to do more, score more goals and play better. I hope it keeps going.

"This is only the beginning! "I just try to play my own football. This is the way I play, trying to make things happen, score goals and provide assists. That's what I came here for, to play good football and score goals, especially when we can count on players like Edi Cavani, Mbappé, Di Maria. In attack, we are all players that work hard for each other, create chances, score goals and win matches."

Between them, Neymar, Mbappe and Cavani have scored 48 league goals this term - and some of their interplay has been spectacular. Neymar said: "It's true that things have gone very quickly. But we still need more time to keep getting to know each other and how we play, but we're on the right track. We all speak the universal language of football, it's a special language and all intelligent footballers speak this same language on the pitch. It's normal, and we're getting to know one another and everyone now knows what the strengths of each of their team-mates are.

"It comes with having players of this quality, from each athlete on the pitch, because our success doesn't depend on only the three attacking players. We have a very complete team. The ball needs to reach the forwards to score goals, but without midfielders or defenders that wouldn't be possible."

"I came here to make history"

"Everyone knows the potential of Paris Saint-Germain now. Every player here is a quality footballer, we have an extremely strong squad and that's very important. We know we are capable of doing something great in the Champions league this season.

"A player always wants to write history for their club and that's why I came here to Paris Saint-Germain – to make history with this club."
