PSG poised to reach landmark

It is one for the statisticians, Paris Saint-Germain are closing in on their 2000th Ligue 1 goal as they target a 600th top flight victory this weekend.

The goal-counter is currently on 1998 and as the Paris giants are averaging exactly two goals per game this season there is a good, sporting chance they will reach the two thousand mark on Sunday against Nancy, at the Parc des Princes.

It all started back in August 1971, when French International Jean-Claude Bras scored the first ever goal for the newly formed PSG. In a nice touch of symmetry that historic strike was scored against, none other than, Nancy.

During the intervening 40 years some stellar names have graced the Parc, names such as Dominique Rocheteau, Pauleta, Carlos Bianchi, Mustapha Dahleb, Safet Susic, Rai, David Ginola and George Weah. They are all club legends but it is perhaps Oumar Sène and Ricardo who could lay claim to have scored the most important goals for the capital side – efforts which, ultimately, secured the Ligue 1 titles of 1986 and 1994. Meanwhile, as the club and players chase history, a win against Nancy would also be a 600th in the league.

Elsehwere David Beckham, who has been linked with a move to the French capital, has said that he will decide on his future after the MLS final which sees his LA Galaxy take on Houston Dynamo in Carson, California this Sunday.
