Wahbi Khazri's early goal set Stade Rennais FC on their way to 2-0 win away at stumbling Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday evening.

Olympique Lyonnais  0 - 2  Stade Rennais FC

THE MATCH

Rennes went in front from their first attempt of the game, and it was a horrible goal for the home side to concede. Marcelo tried to head a long kick downfield from Tomáš Koubek back towards his own goalkeeper, but he did not get enough on the ball. Instead Khazri was sent clear to finish past Anthony Lopes and score his seventh Ligue 1 Conforama goal of the season, his first in 2018.

It took Lyon until after the break, with Memphis Depay and Houssem Aouar having come on for Mariano Díaz and Lucas Tousart, to really threaten a fightback. However, they were left frustrated by a combination of bad luck and bad finishing.

Depay hit the bar direct from a corner just after the hour mark, but the Dutchman also headed down into the ground and over from an inviting Nabil Fekir corner (69'). Bertrand Traoré then tripped over his own leg after bursting into the box (85'), rather summing up Lyon's evening.

Late second

Rennes had offered nothing going forward in the second half but they wrapped up the points on the counter-attack in the second minute of added time. Khazri released Hamari Traoré down the right, and he cut the ball back for James Léa Siliki. The young midfielder's first attempt was blocked by Lopes, but he scored from the rebound.

It was a welcome return to winning ways for the Brittany side after three consecutive losses in all competitions. In contrast, Lyon have now suffered three straight Ligue 1 Conforama defeats to seriously compromise their UEFA Champions League hopes - they are now four points behind Olympique de Marseille in third and must pick themselves up ahead of their home meeting with Villarreal CF in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

THE PLAYER: Wahbi Khazri

When the Tunisian has scored this season, Rennes have usually obtained a positive result - the exception being in their 2-1 defeat at AS Monaco in December. And the former Girondins de Bordeaux man has now contributed to eight goals in seven matches against OL in Ligue 1, scoring four and setting up four more.

THE STAT: 3

Three straight losses for OL - the last time that happened was in December 2015 and led to coach Hubert Fournier being sacked and Bruno Genesio being appointed over the winter break that followed.
