Sala helps Nantes sail on
Emiliano Sala struck the only goal for the second game running as fifth-placed Nantes left it until stoppage time to seal the deal at promoted Amiens.
Amiens SC 0-1 FC Nantes
It was a scoreline to please Nantes' Italian boss Claudio Ranieri and Les Canaris are effectively in a league of their own in fifth, five points back from fourth-placed Olympique de Marseille and six points ahead of sixth-placed Nice. Amiens, meanwhile, slumped to their fourth straight league loss - their worst run of the season - and are only two points above the bottom three.
Nantes started at pace and Abdoulaye Touré let fly in the 11th minute, failing to find the target. Amiens then had more of the play up until half-time without looking particularly dangerous.
The second half was a different story as Amiens had a series of chances. Serge Gakpé's shot against his former club flicked off Nicolas Pallois for a corner. Soon after that, Gakpé's volley was kept out by Nantes goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu. The Romanian shotstopper was called into action again as he proved equal to a Gaël Kakuta attempt.
With a minute to play Tatarusanu blocked Thomas Monconduit's shot and Gakpé was wasteful with the follow-up. Christophe Pelissier's side were then undone by the sucker punch as in the 92nd-minute Valentin Rongier crossed and Sala headed home from close range.
THE PLAYER: Emiliano Sala
For Ranieri's gameplan to work, Nantes need a reliable source of goals. Argentinian forward Sala has a knack of important strikes. Of his seven league goals this season, five of them have been winners in matches Nantes have claimed by a single goal.
THE STAT: 7
Seven of Nantes' ten Ligue 1 Conforama victories this season have been by a 1-0 scoreline. The other three have been claimed 2-1 by Les Canaris.
