Sarr rescues point for Rennes against Sainté
Ismaïla Sarr's late equaliser secured Stade Rennais FC a point from a 1-1 draw with AS Saint-Etienne on Saturday evening.
Stade Rennais FC 1 - 1 AS Saint-Etienne
Saint-Etienne have undergone a revival under Jean-Louis Gasset, helped by the contributions of their January signings. One of those new recruits was Neven Subotic and the former Borussia Dortmund defender gave the visitors a first-half lead at Roazhon Park, rising above Jérémy Gelin to head in Romain Hamouma's corner (35').
Stéphane Ruffier had already saved Saint-Etienne before that with good saves from Benjamin Bourigeaud and Sanjin Prcić as they held the lead at the interval.
Having got their noses in front, Sainté came close to doubling their lead in the second half as Kévin Monnet-Paquet struck the bar at the end of a breakway (55'), and Rémy Cabella was inches away from finding the net as the game moved into the final 10 minutes.
However, Rennes remained in the game and grabbed an equaliser with only four minutes left as Bourigeaud whipped in a cross from the left and Sarr's glancing header found the far corner of the net.
Rennes are unbeaten in five now but the draw seems them drop out of the top five below rivals Nantes. Saint-Etienne are unbeaten in seven now, although this was a third successive draw.
THE PLAYER: Ismaïla Sarr
The Senegalese starlet is a constant threat but he has not yet added regular goals to his game - this was just his fourth of the season, albeit his second in as many games.
THE STAT: 7
The number of Ligue 1 Conforama games Saint-Etienne have now gone without losing, with three wins and four draws. Only Monaco (14) are currently on a longer unbeaten streak.
