Statattack: The Rule of Threes
©PanoramicWeek 23 saw Bordeaux’s lead atop the Ligue 1 standings dwindle to just three points; Grenoble notched just their third win of the season in all competitions 5-0 against Auxerre; and Saint-Etienne scored three goals at home for the first time in six league outings as they trounced Monaco. Take a look back at Week 22 of the French top flight with www.ligue1.com’s official statistical analysis...

3: Bordeaux’s 4-2 loss in Rennes was the third time the champions have lost after conceding the fist goal and their lead is now down to three points, just a third of what it was going into the winter break. Nonetheless Les Girondins, who currently hold three French titles (Ligue 1, the League Cup and the Champions Trophy) have been on top of the table for three consecutive months and are still in the running in all three domestic competitions: the league, the French Cup and the League Cup.

3: Bottom side Grenoble romped to just their third victory of the season – their third home win – 5-0 over Auxerre after beating Toulouse 1-0 in Week 16 of Ligue 1 and trumping Montpellier 3-2 in the round of 64 of the French Cup) – in the upset of the round, Japan international Daisuke Matsui’s brace taking him to three goals for the season. Grenoble have spent only three weeks – the first three of the season – off the very bottom of the L1 table.

The deluge of five goals – which represented a third of the number Auxerre had conceded leading up to the loss – dropped Auxerre’s defence from second-best in the land to… third. Meanwhile the massive boost to goals scored took Grenoble’s attack from 20th to 18th – third from the bottom!

3: Rennes’ in-form midfielder Sylvain Marveaux, who opened up Bordeaux’s defence to get his side’s 4-2 win over Bordeaux (their third consecutive victory in all competitions) under way has scored three goals in his last two league matches and has three assists for the season. He has also scored three goals against Grenoble this season, one when the sides met in Week six (4-0 win for Rennes) and a double in Week 22 (another 4-0 win for Rennes).

3: Saint-Etienne’s 3-0 win over Monaco made it three years in a row that the men from the principality have failed to win – and failed to score – at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Les Verts’ young gun Emmanuel Rivière’s stoppage time strike was his third of the season, a tally that matches his scoring efforts for France at youth level.
