In an exclusive interview with Le Beau Jeu, the official Ligue 1 podcast, Maxwell has revealed how he and a star-studded Paris Saint-Germain dressing room looked up to David Beckham when the Englishman joined the capital club in early 2013.

Beckham slotted into a squad that contained the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Motta and Thiago Silva yet the former England captain still stood out for his aura and the example he set despite coming towards the end of his career. Former Inter Milan and Barcelona left-back Maxwell had already won the league in three countries and yet the Brazilian was struck by his new teammate's presence.

Speaking to Robbie Thomson in a PSG special of the Le Beau Jeu podcast, Maxwell said: "I think we could never realise how big was the opportunity to play with a guy like this. Ibra came and Zlatan's a big name but I think everybody was looking at David. We were his fans and now we were seeing him up close and having the opportunity to learn from his experience at big clubs, his experience in big games. We were feeling so much happiness to have him around us, especially at the end of his career.

"For me it was something I could never have imagined"

"Giving us this opportunity was amazing and of course it was changing the image of the club as well. For me it was something I could never have imagined and a big opportunity to learn from somebody who was so nice and so professional. We could see him every day at work and it was a big opportunity and for me it was a blessing."

"Transformational effect"

Club president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi told France Football this week: "I have to mention David Beckham. Even though he was only at Paris Saint-Germain for a short time, he had a transformational effect on our club. His commitment in training and his attention to detail at all times, his determination to succeed, his taste for teamwork and his natural aura were extremely precious assets."

Beckham retired from football at the age of 38 with a Ligue 1 winners' medal, his final appearance seeing him captain PSG against Brest on an emotional night at the Parc des Princes on May 18 2013.
