In the five months since the start of the 2020-21 campaign, Stede Brestois 29 midfielder Romain Faivre has gone from unknown to unmissable…

"He's an elegant player, you know, as you can see," Steve Mounié, the club's five-goal striker, told The Ligue 1 Show on beIN SPORTS. "He's a brilliant dribbler, every weekend he does some enjoyable dribbles, and he helps us a lot, he creates chances, and helps the team in different kind of ways."

Many tools

"He's a boy with real potential," concurred coach Olivier Dall'Oglio. "He's comfortable on the ball, and fast in possession, he's got great vision too. He's got something special. He rarely loses the ball, he can break through the lines by dribbling, and his passing creates so many chances for us. He's a boy who can provide passes, but who's also capable of scoring goals."

Bursting onto the scene at 22 years old, Brest's creator-in-chief has taken his time to get to the top, but such have been the quality of his performances this season, he has earned a first call up to the French under-21 squad and attracted the attention of some of Europe's biggest teams. So how exactly has Faivre's sudden rise to stardom come about?

"The talent has always been there, but I've been working really hard behind the scenes," said the man himself. "And because this is my first season, I get a lot of advice from my teammates. It's really interesting, and it gives me confidence and that's important because I'm still young, I haven't achieved anything yet, I'm ambitious and I won't stop now."

Making and taking

With four goals and three assists to his name, Faivre is one of the top-scoring midfielders in France this season. But finding the net is not necessarily the reason he has made a name for himself. Cutting inside from a wide midfield berth, Brest's main man has been running the show for his team.

"I've always preferred playing in a central role, because it's where there is the most freedom, even if playing there requires a big pair of lungs," he said. "It's true that I enjoy running up and down, defending as well as creating and attacking, but I adapt to the way we play. The coach wants me to cut in and create space for my teammates.

"I really enjoy being the player who facilitates our transitions but not necessarily just by dribbling, by passing it too, that's what I enjoy most in football."

Revenge?

And in October, Faivre scored something of a symbolic goal. Netting the winner against AS Monaco - the team he left for Brest for, for just €400,000 euros, in July - the midfielder took another big step towards proving his true worth.

"I was delighted because my parents were in the stands," explained Faivre. "I wouldn't say it was revenge because I've only got good things to say about Monaco, it's a great club. But of course, I was happy, it was a top-flight goal, that's not something that happens every day."

If the word revenge is even mentioned, it's because Faivre played just one little league game for Monaco, back in December 2018. The man in charge at that point, was a certain Thierry Henry, who was a key figure in the young man's career.

"He's important to me," Faivre continued. "After all, he was the first man to give me my chance and show trust in me. He's incredibly demanding at training and in everyday life, I really progressed and understood things with him, I'll always be grateful."

On the highest stage

Now fully unleashed in the top flight, Faivre has shown he can compete with the very best. Indeed, he caused Paris Saint-Germain real problems at the Parc des Princes earlier this month.

"I don't really worry about who's in front of me but of course it was nice to play at the Parc des Princes," he said. "It was my first time, playing against such players was something new too, but I didn't feel any stress, I just played my game."

So just what is the newest star of French football hoping for this year?

"To keep on performing this way," he Faivre concluded. "To go to the Under-21 Euros, and why not win that too?"
