USMNT striker Timothy Weah and Canada forward Jonathan David joined in-form Yusuf Yazici on the scoresheet as Lille won 3-0 at Bordeaux on Wednesday to secure their place atop the Ligue 1 Uber Eats table.

THE MATCH

With the teams behind them all playing in the late kick-offs, Lille had an opportunity to cement their hold on top spot in the table with a fifth successive victory. They should have had an opening goal inside the first minute but Jonathan Ikoné headed over Reinildo's cross. The France international, one of five changes made to the league leader's starting XI following Sunday's 1-0 win over Dijon, then wasted another good opportunity when he fired over the crossbar (11') as the visitors made a strong start.

Rémi Oudin's snap shot — comfortably stopped by Mike Maignan — heralded Bordeaux coming to the fore, even if Benoit Costil was forced into a fine flying save by Jonathan Bamba after Enock Kwateng had carelessly lost possession (22').

With Hatem ben Arfa again pulling the strings, the hosts created opportunities for Samuel Kalu (28') and Hwang Ui-Jo (38'), but the former fired straight at Maignan while the latter shot over the bar from close range.

Lille made Bordeaux pay for their profligacy after the break. First,  Yazici fired high into the net (55') after Maignan's quick clearance and Bamba's directness had created the opportunity for the Turkey international to claim his seventh Ligue 1 Uber Eats goal of the season.

From a Bordeaux corner, substitutes Luiz Araujo and David combined on a blistering counter-attack to tee up Weah for the second (66') and leave the hosts on the canvas.

They would have picked themselves up — and perhaps got something from the game — but for Maignan. First, he quite brilliantly parried a point-blank Hwang header that looked destined to reduce Bordeaux's deficit (70') and he then stopped a Ben Arfa drive (74').

Laurent Koscielny struck the crossbar with a header (85') to leave the hosts frustrated, and that feeling was compounded when David burst onto an Ikoné through ball to net the third (89') - his third league goal in four games - and send Lille five points clear at the top of the table with title rivals Lyon and PSG still to play.

THE PLAYER: Mike Maignan

France's third-choice goalkeeper was crucial in helping set up his team's all-important opening goal, and then denied Hwang at 2-0 when a Bordeaux goal could have changed the complexion — and the result — of the game.

THE STAT: 24

Lille have 24 points from 11 away games this season, the best record in the division.

Elsewhere, Metz remain unbeaten in 2021 but could only draw at home to Montpellier, who had a Gaëtan Laborde goal to thank for cancelling out Pape Matar Sarr's opener.

Rennes also went in front thanks to Martin Terrier, but Breton rivals Lorient, who had beaten PSG at the weekend, equalised seven minutes from time at Roazhon Park through Quentin Boisgard. Brest scored twice in the last seven minutes to come back from 2-0 down to earn a point at Strasbourg while Reims and Angers played out a goalless draw.
