Olympique Lyonnais 3-0 Angers SCO

THE MATCH

Rudi Garcia restored six players to his starting XI from the team who scraped past third-tier Red Star on penalties in the Coupe de France on Thursday, and Lyon looked better for it. Islam Slimani had the first real chance of the game, forcing a save from Paul Bernardoni with a first-time shot from Memphis' cross, before the flag for offside went up against him (12'). Angelo Fulgini looked the most likely to get Angers going at the other end, and he slipped Abdoulaye Bamba for a cutback to Stéphane Bahoken which was well saved by Anthony Lopes (16'). Memphis settled home nerves soon after, though, finishing on the rebound after Paqueta had somehow hit the post from point-blank range (20'). Lopes - back in the side ahead of Julian Pollersbeck - was called into action by Fulgini again soon after (27'), but Lyon were mostly in control of the first-half traffic, and they pulled further clear just before the break, Karl Toko Ekambi weaving in and out of the Angers defence having switched flank before crossing low for Paqueta to make amends for his earlier miss (41').

Lyon's share of possession

Memphis forced Bernardoni into a good save early in the second half having attempted to curl the ball into the former France under-21 goalkeeper's far corner (50'), and Lyon should really have pulled further clear minutes later when Maxence Caqueret pulled the ball back for Toko Ekambi, who mishit it on the move (54'). Angers still looked capable of hitting OL on the counter, though, and they nearly reduced the arrears with little more than an hour gone. Fulgini found Bamba with a stunning ball into the far corner, and when the Ivorian crossed first time for Mohamed-Ali Cho, the second-half substitute should really have done better than volley it wide with the goal at his mercy (66'). Lyon thought they had won a penalty when Bernardoni clipped Toko Ekambi on the way through, but the flag had already gone up for offside (74'). Slimani had a goal ruled out for the same reason (78') but there was no doubt about Memphis strike late on, Paqueta's sublime through-ball matched by an exquisite, lofted finish for 3-0 (83').

THE PLAYER: Lucas Paqueta

This was a fine team performance from Lyon, but Paqueta's influence seems to have been growing by the week. Playing in a more advanced role than when he first joined the club from AC Milan at the start of the season, the Brazilian midfielder grabbed his seventh goal of the campaign on Sunday, six of which have been scored in 2021.

THE STAT: 15

Memphis tallied his 15th and 16th goals of the campaign, the second time he has surpassed the 15-goal mark with the club following his first full season with the club in 2017-18. Only two other non-French players have ever managed such a single-season haul more than once for les Gones, Dutchman Memphis preceded by Brazil's Sonny Anderson and Argentina's Lisandro Lopez.
