Olympique Lyonnais suffered another setback in a difficult season on Saturday as they went down 2-1 at home to RC Strasbourg Alsace at the Groupama Stadium. It was just a second win of the season for Racing.

Olympique Lyonnais 1-2 RC Strasbourg Alsace

THE MATCH

Strasbourg took the lead just before the half-hour mark in stunning fashion, with a Sanjin Prcic corner being cleared as far as Jean-Eudes Aholou, who returned the ball first-time on the volley from range and found the bottom corner of the net (29’). The visitors then doubled their advantage just three minutes later with Kévin Gameiro lifting the ball over the goalkeeper and Habib Diallo following in to bundle it over the line.

Lyon did get a goal back before half-time as Alexandre Lacazette converted a penalty awarded for handball to take his tally for the season to 11 (45+2’). They then pushed in the second half but their efforts to find an equaliser were in vain.

Strasbourg had won just once in their first 17 Ligue 1 Uber Eats games this season but the response to sacking coach Julien Stéphan on Monday has been remarkable. Mathieu Le Scornet has stepped up to replace Stéphan and oversaw a creditable draw with high-flying RC Lens in midweek before this win, which leaves the Alsace club provisionally outwith the relegation zone ahead of Sunday’s matches.

OL, meanwhile, are nine points adrift of the European places, a gap that could grow before the weekend concludes. They have won just one of their last six league outings.

THE PLAYER: Kévin Gameiro

The veteran striker played a part in Strasbourg’s winning goal on what was the 500th top-division appearance of his career. His two spells in Alsace have sandwiched stints at FC Lorient, Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla, Atlético Madrid and Valencia.

THE STAT: 44

You have to go back 44 years, to 1979, to find the last time Strasbourg won away to Lyon in the top flight. Back then Racing were just beginning their defence of the title, which they had won for the one and only time in their history. Now they are battling to avoid relegation and this result could prove precious.
