Stade Brestois pulled off a gritty 1-0 victory against Olympique de Marseille on Sunday at Stade Francis-Le Blé. The three points were vital for Brest, significantly boosting their chances of making it to the UEFA Champions League next season.

In the first half, Brest took an aggressive stance, attempting a total of ten shots, but they could not score. Marseille only registered three total shots in the first 45 minutes as their defense was put to the test.

Brest's plan to keep an assertive attack going in the second took a hit when Steve Mounie received a red card in the 60th minute, reducing the team down to ten men for the rest of the contest.

Despite playing with ten men, Brest broke the 0-0 deadlock courtesy of a goal from Pierre Lees-Melou. The contest appeared to be heading toward a scoreless draw, but then the veteran midfielder scored in the 88th minute for what was the game-winning goal.

Marseille's attack did improve in the second half, as they registered six total shots but couldn't score. The loss is also a blow for OM and their aspirations to play in a European competition next season.

As for Brest, the result allows for Brest to leapfrog OGC Nice for second place, with Eric Roy and his team currently occupying an automatic Champions League group stage berth for next season.

Brest aims to hold onto their position when they travel to Stade de la Meinau for a clash with RC Strasbourg. Olympique de Marseille will have to shift their focus to the UEFA Europa League knockout round play-off second leg against FC Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday at the Stade Vélodrome.
