With Steve Mounié suspended, Éric Roy's side turned to an unlikely source for goals in a comprehensive win away to Strasbourg

Much of the good work being done by Éric Roy's surging Stade Brestois side this season has been built on teamwork and a collective ethos, and the Breton side's comprehensive win away to Strasbourg was proof positive of that on Saturday evening.

Knowing that fellow Champions League contenders Nice and Lille were set to face kinder fixtures this weekend than their own trip to a sold-out Stade de la Meinau, Les Pirates had plenty of pressure on themselves, especially as they would be without goalkeeper Marco Bizot and Steve Mounié, both of whom were suspended for this fixture.

Strasbourg had their own absences, though, in the form of Dilane Bakwa and Thomas Delaine, and struggled to get to grips with the match in front of a home crowd already displeased at last weekend's loss to relegation-threatened Lorient. Brest showed why they're a deserving second from off the off, repeatedly testing goalkeeper Alaa Bellaarouch before Mahdi Camara, playing in a more advanced role in the absence of Mounié, opened the scoring with a sweetly-struck curling shot.

The goal seemed to give the hosts some energy, but it would be Brest and Camara who struck again shortly before the interval, netting from a cutback from Martín Satriano. Strasbourg's resistance dropped from that point, generating few chances, and when a penalty was given for handball on the hour mark, Camara stepped up to complete his hat trick.

With the win, Brest are now four points clear in second, while their opponents, who marked Patrick Vieira's 100th match in Ligue 1 on the evening, may now be looking nervously over their shoulder, as they sit just three points above the relegation playoff place ahead of their Coupe de France quarterfinal against Lyon in the week.
