In a closely fought game, a minor error from Stade de Reims resulted in the sole goal of the match, securing a 1-0 victory for LOSC Lille on Saturday at the Stade Auguste-Delaune II.

The first half was a scoreless affair between the two teams. Reims had two total shots while Lille had five total shots, but neither side could break the 0-0 deadlock. In the second half, the roles reversed, as Reims had six total shots, and Lille only had three total shots.

As both teams searched for a goal to secure the three points, Les Dogues seized an opportunity when Yunis Abdelhamid made a mistake. The veteran defender's errant pass back to the goalkeeper opened the door for Jonathan David to swoop in, intercept the ball, and score in the 56th minute.

Even with more than 30 minutes to score the equalizer, Abdelhamid's error proved costly as David's goal ended up being the only one of the match, securing all three points for Lille.

Paulo Fonseca and his team's win have positioned them well in the battle for a UEFA Champions League spot next season. Currently, Lille (41 points) are trailing Stade Brestois (43 points) by just two points. If Brest loses against Le Havre on Sunday, Lille would have an opportunity to leapfrog them next weekend.

Lille will have to put the league on hold as they shift their focus to the UEFA Conference League and the first leg of their Round of 16 tie against Austrian side Sturm Graz on Thursday at Merkur Arena.

As for Reims, this defeat moves them farther from a chance at European competition. Will Still and his team must have a bounceback performance next weekend as they'll travel to the Parc des Princes to face Paris Saint-Germain.
