Rodez AF were made to work hard despite having a man advantage for nearly half the match, but eventually held on to prevail over visitors Paris FC in the first round of the promotion playoffs.

The first round of the Ligue 2 BKT promotion playoffs took place last night, and despite a valiant effort, capped by a last-minute equalizer while playing with ten men, Paris FC were eliminated by Rodez AF, 3-2 on penalties after the match finished two all.

The fifth-place visitors were up against it from the start, as they would have to take on Rodez, who had finished in fourth place, without Ilan Kebbal. Excellent all season with six goals and ten assists, the former Stade de Reims winger was sidelined with an ankle injury. Coach Stéphane Gilli would be able to call on veteran midfielder Cyril Mandouki after he had been a doubt with a shoulder issue.

Rodez, who have the youngest side in Ligue 2, were also without a key pair of players, goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau, absent since being injured on international duty with DR Congo at the Africa Cup of Nations and forward Taïryk Arconte, on loan from Stade Bretois.

It was the visitors who struck first, with Nouha Dicko, a January arrival from OFI Crete, scrambling home the opener with just four minutes on the clock, his sixth goal since joining the club. It didn’t take long for Rodez to respond, though. The hosts won a penalty at a corner, and captain Bradley Danger duly converted to level the match with just eight minutes gone.

From there, Rodez would take the lead just past the half-hour mark, with a sublime strike from Killian Corredor, his 19th goal of the season in all competitions as he found the top corner with a shot across goal. Rodez would hold that lead through the break, and looked to have things sewn up when Paris FC went down to ten men following a sending off for defender Moustapha Mbow.

Undeterred, Gilli’s side battled hard and eventually found an equalizer in stoppage time as Kouadio-Yves Dabila pounced on a loose ball at a corner in the sixth minute of added time, taking the match to penalties. Things looked bleak for the hosts as they missed their first three attempts of the shootout, but Adama Camara put his effort over the bar for Paris FC, allowing Rodez to progress to Friday’s match against third-place AS Saint-Étienne thanks in part to several smart saves by 18-year old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, an emergency signing from Stade de Reims in April.
