AS Saint-Étienne secured a 2-1 first leg win in the Ligue 1 promotion/relegation playoff tie over FC Metz on Thursday night at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

Saint-Étienne was the protagonist in the first half and used the home crowd to their advantage, as the team had eight total shots. Les Verts would open the scoring in the 19th minute courtesy of a goal from Ibrahim Sissoko.

Olivier Dall'Oglio and his team had the momentum but couldn't hold onto the 1-0 advantage. It was the veteran Ismaël Traoré who leveled the match 1-1 in the 45th minute and gave Metz life heading into the dressing room.

The final 45 minutes saw Saint-Étienne record seven shots as the team bounced back from conceding the late goal in the first half. They broke through again to take back their lead with a goal from Irvin Cardona in the 80th minute, giving them a 2-1 advantage late in the contest and the win.

It was a challenging night for Metz as they recorded five total shots during the 90 minutes. Metz will welcome Saint-Étienne to the Stade Saint-Symphorien on Sunday night, and the team must overcome the 2-1 aggregate score along with the struggles that the squad has encountered to end this 2023-24 season.

László Bölöni and his team have lost five matches in a row, and they'll need to snap this streak to remain in Ligue 1. A loss will seal their fate to play in Ligue 2 next season.

As for Saint-Étienne, the win over Metz marks their second straight win as they garner confidence at the perfect time. Les Verts have overcome going winless in their last three Ligue 2 matches and not letting that form carry over to the playoffs.
