Wissam Ben Yedder is back in Ligue 1 Conforama! The former Toulouse FC player, now a France international, has signed a five-season deal with AS Monaco worth a reported €40m, joining fellow fresh recruit Henry Onyekuru.
AS Monaco have struck a major blow on the transfer market. In search of some fresh impetus after a difficult 2018-2019 season that saw them finish 17th, the principality club has made a huge signing in the form of Wissam Ben Yedder (29), who joins Leonardo Jardim's squad for the next five years following a three season with Sevilla FC.
Ben Yedder is no stranger to Ligue 1 Conforama fans, having come up through the ranks at Toulouse FC. Trained in Futsal to Toulouse at the age of 20, the 1.70m centre-forward scored 63 goals in 156 Ligue 1 Conforama matches for the Téfécé. In six seasons in France's elite, his best total was 17 goals in 35 appearances in 2016 - a feat achieved just before he joined Sevilla FC.
In Andalusia, the native of Sarcelles quickly adapted to the Spanish league, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in 31 games in his first season. The following year, Sevilla FC underwent several changes of coach and, not always finding himself picked at centre-forward, he ended the season with just nine goals in 25 games. It was in the Champions League that the former TFC player made his mark, however, scoring eight goals in nine games, including a brace against Manchester United that sent Sevilla to the quarter-finals.
This drew the attention of France boss Didier Deschamps, who is handed Ben Yedder his first call-up in March 2018. Absent from the 2018 World Cup-winning squad, he was recalled in June 2019 and duly scored his first France goal, against Andorra (4-0). This was a richly deserved reward at the end of his best-ever season (30 goals and 11 assists in all competitions combined).
Ben Yedder will now have the task of leading the ASM attack and perhaps marking the history of the principality club the way he did that of Sevilla, where he rose to fourth in the club's all-time goal-scoring standings (70 goals in 138 games).
It took time to materialise, but on Monday Monaco confirmed arrival of Nigerian international striker Henry Onyekuru (22) from EPL side Everton. The former Anderlecht player, who was on loan last season at Galatasaray, arrives thanks to a €15m (including bonuses) payment and is linked to the club through to 2024.
"I'm very happy to join a great club like AS Monaco," said Nigeria international Henry Onyekuru (11 caps, one goal), who will replace Rony Lopes (who signed for Sevilla FC as part of Ben Yedder's transfer). "I will give everything to improve and help the club to have a great season. I look forward to meeting my teammates.
"We are very happy to have Henry Onyekuru with us," said Monaco Vice President Oleg Petrov. "He has demonstrated his qualities in recent seasons. He is a fast and powerful offensive player who will strengthen our offensive sector. We welcome him."
