Radamel Falcao set AS Monaco on the way to a huge 2-0 win over Amiens SC that all but secures the principality club's top-flight survival, but leaves their opponents still in serious danger.
AS Monaco 2 - 0 Amiens SC
THE MATCH
Monaco had been sucked right back into the relegation battle on a run of seven matches without a win, and the stakes were high for both teams at the Stade Louis II. Nevertheless, it was Leonardo Jardim's side who came good at a crucial point, with Falcao heading them in front from an Aleksandr Golovin corner in the 26th minute.
Diego Benaglio then made a couple of vital interceptions to keep the 2017 champions in front before they got the decisive second goal with eight minutes remaining. This time Golovin was the scorer, the Russian running through from halfway to beat Régis Gurtner and score his third league goal of the season.
It is a huge win for Monaco, who climb above Amiens into 16th and are three points clear of SM Caen in the relegation play-off place. Given their goal difference advantage, they are probably now safe, although a draw at OGC Nice on the last day will end any doubt.
In contrast, Amiens are just two points clear of Caen so need to win at home to EA Guingamp in their last game to guarantee safety.
THE PLAYER: Radamel Falcao
Where would Monaco be without their captain? The Colombian set Monaco on their way with his 15th league goal of the season.
THE STAT: 9
Amiens have now gone nine games without a win. They have drawn seven of those matches, but could still drop into the bottom three with the wrong combination of results on the last day.
