Olympique Lyonnais moved a provisional six points clear in third with a 2-1 win over EA Guingamp on Friday. Martin Terrier and Nabil Fekir got their goals at the Groupama Stadium.

THE MATCH
Lyon were third at the start of play, 17 places and some 29 points better off than Ligue 1 Conforama’s basement club, Guingamp, and they started on the front foot, with Terrier lifting the home support off their seats inside the first ten minutes, only to have his effort ruled out for offside (9’). Moussa Dembélé then got the break of the ball in the Guingamp box after another Terrier attempt was parried, but Félix Eboa pulled off a stunning block to deny the former Celtic striker, who otherwise had the goal at his mercy (12’). OL didn’t have to wait long for the opener, though, with Terrier in the right place at the right time to latch onto Houssem Aouar’s parried shot and fire high into Marc-Aurèle Caillard’s net (15’). Eboa simply refused to let his head go down, though, and having already denied Dembélé at the other end, he proved to be Guingamp’s hero in attack midway through the half, rising highest to meet Pedro Rebocho’s corner for 1-1 (21’). Visiting joy was short-lived though, and Fekir restored OL’s advantage, controlling Aouar’s pass and steering home into the far corner (36’).
Lyon cruise to victory
Lyon dominated possession into the second half, but it wasn’t until pat the hour mark that they next threatened Guingamp’s goal. Terrier steered a wicked cross into the box for Dembélé, and the striker would have had his eighth Ligue 1 Conforama goal but for a magnificent stop from Caillard (65’). Guingamp coach Jocelyn Gourvennec had seen enough, bringing on fresh legs in the shape of Nolan Roux and Nicolas Benezet (66’), but OL continued to dominate, with Dembélé seeing a penalty claim waved away soon after (69’). Guingamp still threaten to strike on the counter, and Roux looked odds on to score after being played through for a one-on-one with Anthony Lopes by Benezet, but the Portugal shot-stopper raced off his line to quell the danger (74’). Aouar might have added gloss to the scoreline late on, but he shot over the bar (82') and it ended 2-1 to Lyon.
THE PLAYER: Martin Terrier
Given Barcelona loom for Lyon in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, Bruno Génésio named a surprisingly strong side here. Terrier was one of the few beneficiaries of rotation, however, with this just his fifth start of the season. He seized his chance with both hands, finding space between the lines, completing 85 percent of his passes in the final third and doubling his season goal haul to boot.

Lyon have won each of their last five games against Guingamp. The last time the Bretons picked up all three points against Les Gones was in February 2017, when Benezet secured a 2-1 win at the Stade du Roudourou.
