AS Saint-Etienne announced on Tuesday that Jean-Louis Gasset will stay on as head coach. The 64-year-old was brought in as interim boss in December 2017 and to Les Verts to a seventh-placed finish.

After an excellent second half to the season on the AS Saint-Etienne bench, Jean-Louis Gasset has signed a contract extension with Les Verts, the club announced on Tuesday. The length of contract for Laurent Blanc's former assistant - who took the club from 16th to seventh on the Ligue 1 Conforama table - was not indicated.

Great strides

Jean-Louis Gasset joined AS Saint-Etienne in November 2017 to assist then-coach Julien Sablé, who himself had recently taken over from Spaniard Oscar Garcia. On December 20, with the team sitting in 16th place at the half-way point of the season, Gasset was promoted to the role of head coach.

Thanks notably to the recruitment of players such as Mathieu Debuchy and Yann M'Vila in the winter transfer window, Les Verts collected 35 points in the second half of the season and ended up one place and five points higher up the Ligue 1 Conforama table than they did last season.
