THE MATCH

Marseille needed to put the heartbreak of their UEFA Europa League final defeat against Atlético Madrid behind them as soon as possible and bounce back here at the Vélodrome. They knew they realistically had to win this game and hope for either an Olympique Lyonnais slip-up, or a defeat for AS Monaco, in order to snatch a Champions League qualifying spot.

Rudi Garcia's side started superbly, taking the lead early on when Boubacar Kamara's pass picked out Morgan Sanson in the box, and the midfielder took a touch before finishing superbly into the top corner (10').

It was 2-0 not long after that. Lucas Ocampos got up to meet Florian Thauvin's cross from the right, but the Argentine's header was saved by Régis Gurtner. However, Kostantinos Mitroglou - starting in one of five changes to the side that began against Atlético - was on hand to convert the loose ball for his ninth Ligue 1 Conforama goal of the campaign (18').

Amiens managed to pull one back before the break, though. Just like in midweek, a Steve Mandanda ball out from the back and a poor piece of control from the recipient - this time Sanson - was at the origin of the goal. The visitors recovered possession, and Thomas Monconduit slipped in Moussa Konaté, who finished for his 13th of a fine campaign (30').

Amiens finish with 10 men

That set nerves jangling in the home support, but OM held their lead until the interval, and were unlucky not to go further in front just after the restart as Gurtner made a fantastic save from Ocampos.

Amiens were then reduced to 10 men as Monconduit was shown a straight red card for raking his studs down Ocampos' calf (55'). And Marseille saw the game out, even nearly getting a third goal as a Valère Germain header hit the top of the bar late on.

Marseille's efforts were ultimately in vain, though - wins for Monaco in Troyes and Lyon at home to OGC Nice meant OM could not get a first podium finish since 2013. They will have to settle for Europa League football again next season, although they will go straight in at the group stage.

THE PLAYER: Kostantinos Mitroglou

This season may ultimately be remembered as a glorious failure for OM. Mitroglou in many ways is a symbol of that - the Greek striker has not proven to be the star goal-scorer they so desperately wanted at the beginning of the campaign. But his final statistics are not bad, with nine league goals. Only Florian Thauvin (22) got more in the end.

THE STAT: 77

Marseille's final points tally is their best since 2009-10, when they took the title with 78. But it is not enough to qualify for the Champions League as they agonisingly miss out by a point. An eight-game unbeaten run to finish the season was ultimately in vain.
